What I've Learnt So Far in Life: Part 1

I recently found myself in a discussion about what it means to be self-centred and how it is perceived as negative. Although “self-centred” has many different names, it may mean different things to different people. The conversation however concluded that it's negative. But as days go on, I find myself disagreeing more and more with this opinion. Here is why:

Self-interest guides you to self-awareness, self-evaluation and self-development. Although I’ve just entered my twenties, I find it hard to believe that it isn't the most important principle for the rest of my life.

When I think of my morals and values, I know I can always relate them to my religion to find dependence when needed in life. Self-worth is the issue. I believe when I start to give the same time and patience to myself that I freely give to other things, I open up a space that allows for an honest conversation with myself. This process makes it easier for me to evaluate my thoughts, feelings, and actions and check if they are aligned with my standard of correctness.

As selfish as it sounds, being self-obsessed allowed me to cater to myself. Internal validation, self-love, and independence are the friends that protect you from needing to outsource so much in life. When I learned to become my provider in security and validation, the dependency on others felt irrelevant and less significant because I could provide it all on my own. Learning to honour myself taught me to celebrate the spaces I’ve occupied and will occupy in life.

So self-obsession or interest (whatever you may call it) can help you become your provider. And I think that such a personal relationship is a strength to carry in life.
