To be a Friend
Saleem Yusuf
The moment we think of friends we think of the fun times. A healthy friendship should involve a lot of memorable moments. However, true friendship is shown when times aren’t all sunshine & rainbows.
If you’re anything like me, I don’t throw the term friend around very easily. If someone is a friend, there is more than a common interest between us. With the select few people I call my close friends, I share a level of history and we have actually grown and matured together. Because of this, these people have become a part of my life whether I like it or not. There is a moment where a friend crosses to a point beyond friendship. They are welcomed as family and even help our family as I would, without question, help theirs.
Because of this, as with your own family, a level of loyalty becomes present for your close friends. If they require anything, you are there to help them and vice versa. Whenever good happens in their lives, you are excited alongside them and when somethings negative befalls them, you feel their pain.
Now loyalty doesn’t mean you do whatever they ask of you. It is that you care about them to the truest sense of the word. You want what is best for them, no more or less. If they do something wrong, it is our duty to address it as we know that this is something that they would regret, even at the cost of their emotions and in extreme cases, the friendship.
The reality is when you truly care about people in your life, sacrificing for them whether it is physical, time, or emotions, it is normal and not something where repayment is expected. Whenever either of you needs help, the knowledge that you have one another’s backs allows you to advance confidently in life.
