The Next Chapter…
Saleem Yusuf
The time has come for me to open the next chapter of my life as I have officially moved out this year. I, fortunately, have been blessed with an amazing mother who taught me the value of cleanliness, cooking, showing kindness, never giving up and staying true to my deen. I have an incredible father who taught me the importance of working hard, responsibly managing money, living humbly, always having tools and being able to fix anything. They’ve done their jobs well in ensuring I was self-sustainable and ready, and I hope I can learn from them.
I think it's a given that I would miss my family. However, what surprised me the most isn’t the fact I would miss them, but it is when I would miss them. Fixing the plumbing on my washing machine and being reminded of how my dad would fix everything. How he never called a handyman. How if it was something to do with cars it was the only time he'd ask for my expertise. Cleaning and remembering how my mum was the definition of a perfectionist which has now set my own standard for what clean is. Even at the most random moments like when simply making a sandwich, I would remember my post-workout routine and my mum saying, “why do you abuse yourself like this?”.
If anything my current experience has just made me more appreciative of what was and what is. How I was raised, the lessons I learnt, and the time I was blessed enough to have maddening my family with my presence and uncountable supply of unsolicited hugs. As I’ve once said in an article in the past, savour the chapter in life you are in now as you eventually will not be able to.
