The Drive Behind Hobbies
Tasnim Saadi
Whether it is to simply escape the constant go-go-go lifestyle we live in during this dynamic era or if it’s a means to stay connected with our roots, hobbies are important as they are the one thing you do without any expectations from anyone. It’s the one thing you do that is special to you without having to justify yourself. For yourself.
Having a hobby is important to aid in self-determination and promote healthy mental health. The unique skills attained by each differing hobby allow one to not only know what one can achieve but also be a means to achieve them, no matter how small these hobbies may seem. Most people may view hobbies as activities you do because you enjoy them or to pass the time. I disagree with this as there are many activities a person can do to simply pass the time but there's always a deeper reason why you choose a specific activity over others when there are so many hobbies to choose from.
As I sit here writing this piece, I feel it’s only right to expose myself a little. After having a busy few weeks (Alhamdulilāh), I feel a little overwhelmed writing this piece. Once I sat down to begin, the procrastination crept in – something I’m notorious for. Then I heard myself say this line; “I probably shouldn’t have agreed to write this since I don’t have the time,” for which my mind instantly procured a counterargument.
I found that the response was what always pushed me to engage in different projects, whether it be in my studies or personal life. It was always the reason I would find myself challenging others a little more than usual. The reason why I wouldn’t back down or go against my word.
The counterargument was: “I have to do this because deep down I know I genuinely believe in this, so I know I genuinely have a passion for this”.
