An Inseparable Madih Group

A focal point in our community, culture and heritage is our Madih group; an ensemble of talented performers that showcase our blend of religion and culture through nasheeds, zikris and melodies.

Passed on through generations, performed throughout the gates of Harar (Baris), voyaged from different lands and heard and loved by many across the globe, these chants make up a crucial part of our identity. In our Melbourne community, the Madih groups are a staple element. Consisting of elders to the very young, the performances are often conducted with the men and young boys seen sitting side by side, shoulder to shoulder, praising God and His Messenger, peace be upon him.

A truly beautiful tradition that is instilled in the youth from a young age. In itself the group can be divided into three based on age; the elders, young adults and young children. Despite the difference in age one thing remains constant. It is evident that the teachings and traditions, practices and customs, techniques and singing styles, instrumentation, flows and adaptations from legends have been preserved. All these aspects seen in the chanting groups have been carefully passed down from one generation to the next and it is great to see that despite having grown up away from the motherland, this tradition still remains with us today.
