Homeschooling amid COVID: an insight

Citra Diyab

COVID-19 has forced many of us to adjust to a new way of life. A unique challenge that parents are having to face is being at home and turning into grade-school teachers for their children. One member from our community that is doing this is Nabeela, a mother of 3. I asked her a few questions to get a better insight into this new challenge that many parents are facing.

Hey Nabeela, hope you’re doing well with everything. What is it like being a mum, a businesswoman and a teacher during these times?

Hi Citra. It is tough. I find I have to wear a lot of hats throughout the day trying to juggle the different roles. It requires a lot of discipline and time management.

In saying that, how do you balance everything especially during the month of Ramadan?

Well in Ramadan it has become even more difficult to manage home schooling because the children’s sleep patterns have been interrupted due to sleeping late, waking up for suhoor etc. The window for home schooling has shortened due to these factors. Still, I am managing because I wake up at least 2 hours before the children to work on my business and plan out the day. That way, when the children wake up we get straight into their studies.

Do you feel as though you have enough resources to help your children through home schooling?

Yes, I believe so. Thankfully the children’s school provided all the stationary materials they need for the duration of the home schooling. Aside from that, we have provided the children with an iPad and laptop for their e-learning.

What would you say is the biggest challenge you have faced?

I would say the biggest challenge is handling the pandemic's immense impact in our lives. We have become busy with adjusting to the new changes and loss of our regular routines that this pandemic has brought upon us. More adversity has came along with the news that we would have to homeschool our children, as it is a very unfamiliar territory which requires more adjustment and PATIENCE. This is heightened especially in trying to homeschool while workimg and looking after younger children.

What advice would you give to other parents?

The most important thing to do is set up a space in the house for your child to study, a place where they can focus on their work without disruption. Try to have an organised system where they can place their books, pens and all of their resources in an area where it is accessible and within reach - so they can work independently and not have to always call out for things.

Secondly, make a structured timetable they can see. I like to hang the timetable on the wall near their work station. On that wall children can easily see the subjects which we will be covering in that particular day. Even where our lunch breaks and other events in the day will be put up on the timetable. That way, everyone is on the same page.

And remember to do your best. Do not put too much pressure on yourself.

Lastly, do you have any fears associated with sending your children back to school once it reopens?

As parents, I think we are all a bit nervous about sending the children back. However, we have explained the importance of good hygiene to the children and keeping a safe distance from others, especially if they appear sick. With the rest, we leave it to Allah.

Thank you so much for your time and May Allah make it easy for you.

Ameen, Thank you!
